Happy Autumn Everyone…Make it a Cleansing One!

Summer’s over and you’re back in the groove while sportively enjoying the August-like weather.

Now what? How about making the first day of Autumn a great time for a change. A simple change, one that involves deleting a bad habit from your daily repertoire.  It doesn’t have to be a major lifestyle change, i.e., quit smoking cigarettes or partying every weekend. Although that would be awesome if you could – which you definitely can, no worries, just pick an easy one like replacing your lunchtime soda with water, or stop eating bread and butter before your meal.

Easier said then done, you might say, but that’s BS…because you can do anything you set your mind to. So make it a cleansing Fall everyone, and drop bad habits like acorns from an oak tree!

When the going gets tough…go to the Yoga

So what does that mean, you might ask…go to the Yoga? Because as tradition may have it, we usually associate “the going gets tough” with the likes of Clint Eastwood and our ability to toughen up and power through any challenging situation with “the tough get going”, right?

Wrong.SandiTreePose

Well, at least it’s wrong in the sense that what is really needed in challenging times is our ability to find peace within ourselves and truly understand that everything is temporary and everything will be OK. To be calm, to reassure yourself that the Universe is conspiring for your highest good in every aspect of your life, and to know that letting go of fear, angst, frustration, disappointment, judgement and self-doubt are all part of the powers of Yoga.

Embracing a lifestyle based on Yoga principles is not just about practicing asanas (i.e., Yoga poses) in a church-like studio with other like-minded individuals. It’s also about how you think, feel and project your positive energy and charisma out into the world, not to mention how you handle tough situations by remaining tranquil and patient and believing you will persevere.

Easier said than done, perhaps, but totally do-able. Whether it’s living week-to-week while always searching for new gigs and barely making ends meet (like my creative friends), or enduring a 3-day flu that keeps you from your Daily Fitness Program (like I just did), or mourning the sudden death of a family friend (RIP – John Scheifele).

Just GO TO THE YOGA, because it works.SandiChildsPose, jpg

And if you’ve never practiced Yoga or don’t even know where to start, try a simple Tree Pose or Childs Pose (see photos), or check-out our 15-second Yoga sequence I recently posted on Instagram @BLVDZEN.

Get Fit. Live Healthy. Lose Inches. Stay Zen.

Sad but true

There’s so much to speak of these days that’s very sad but true.  In addition to the catastrophes and chaos around the globe, this morning I learned about the passing of legendary speech pathologist and dialogue coach, Sam Chwat.  Sam helped thousands of people with speech challenges, as well as coach Hollywood stars like Robert DeNiro, Julia Roberts, Andie MacDowell and Tony Danza, to perfect and/or eliminate accents.  I was fortunate enough to meet Sam the winter of 2006, when I received coaching from his associate, Jessica, before moving to Los Angeles.  He was exactly 10 years older than me. An age far too young to go.  So today, let’s open ours hearts to all those who are suffering and all those who have passed.  And enjoy workout #19 – Heart Openers.  R

It’s never easy

Sunday's Fat Burning Workout

You’ll never hear me say that developing and maintaining a daily fitness program is easy.  It just gets easier to keep it going.  And more rewarding each time you workout, whatever you do.  Like today vs. yesterday.  Yesterday I felt like someone ran me over with a steamroller – you know the feeling. I barely made my 20 minute stretching and abs, but I made it.  Today I felt like a million bucks!  I hit the gym for an hour, then went for a 2-mile run at the Silver Lake Reservoir, then taught an 11a yoga class.  And I’m 47 and lived a party lifestyle until I gave up alcohol three years ago.  So change does happen if you really want it to.  It’s never easy, but in the case of a daily fitness routine, it’s well worth it.  So if you haven’t started one already, well let’s get going.  Because with each passing day your body is not getting any younger, or firmer, or leaner, or stronger, or more flexible without doing something. So make that something the most important 1% of your life.  See you tomorrow – R
